The International Olympiad in Informatics was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and was first held in Bulgaria in May 1989. It is an annual world wide informatics (computing science) competition for senior students in secondary level schools. Students write computer programs to solve challenging problems. The goal of the IOI is to unite, challenge and give recognition to students highly talented in informatics and to encourage friendship amongst these students from diverse cultures.
