iPhone and Open Source: The Buzz

There have been a lot of buzz lately about the iPhone and open source programs for unlocking it.

The iPhone was announced last January 2007 and ever since, talk about it has not died down. It is a multimedia mobile phone from Apple and it is Internet-enabled. Its screen is multi-touch and has several nice features. It is a portable media player and is also a camera phone. Connectivity is possible through its WiFi and web-browsing and email capabilities. The iPhone is a quad-band, utilizes the GSM standard, and EDGE data technology is supported.

Apple has made the iPhone simlocked. It means once you choose a sim from a carrier, it would be your iPhone’s sim forever, no more changing! This is why there are so many talks about it and open source programs to get it unlocked. Open source means the software writing practices and principles that would be available to everybody. iPhone users want their devices to not be simlocked. That is why there are many hackers out there that are developing source codes that would remove the lock and making these source codes available to the public for free. Consumers prefer an unlocked iPhone and open source codes for unlocking them will be widely available soon!
